Juggling Motherhood and Business

From planning weddings to building forts – a week in the life of wedding venue owner, Beth

I spoke to Beth – wedding planner extraordinaire and co-owner of the always-booked-out barn wedding venue Tarureka Estate in Featherston, Wairarapa, about how she juggles the demands of running her own business with husband Reid, meticulously planning the minute details of weddings, and most importantly, raising two adorable munchkins.

1. In a nutshell, tell us what you do and why you do it

I plan and coordinate all weddings at Tarureka Estate. From the moment couples book with me, I guide them through every step of their wedding journey. We hold personal tours, and then it’s all about crafting their perfect day – taking care of all the details so they can enjoy the process, stress-free.

2. What sets your business apart from other businesses like yours?

We’re a small, family-run business, and that personal connection is everything. Our two kids and our dog are part of the Tarureka charm, which gives the venue a unique warmth. It’s not just a venue to us – it’s our home.

Over the years, we’ve poured our hearts into it, and that love is felt by everyone who walks through the doors. You’re not just booking a venue, you’re becoming part of our extended family, and we want everyone to feel like they’re truly at home during their wedding weekend.

3. What gets you most excited about your work?

I absolutely love the process of talking with couples about their wedding vision and then helping them bring that dream to life. It’s incredible to watch all the pieces fall into place. But nothing beats the moment on the big day when the venue is transformed and the couple walks in – it’s like magic, seeing it all come together in real time.

4. If you couldn’t be a wedding planner, what would you be doing?

I honestly can’t imagine myself doing anything else at this point. I think I’d still find a way to be involved in events – whether that’s planning parties or creating memorable experiences for people. The thrill of coordinating celebrations is just too addictive!

5. What does a ‘typical’ day look like for you?

My day kicks off with my two munchkins waking me up as both have made their way into our bed at some point in the night. The first question is always ‘What’s for breakfast?’ Then it’s a whirlwind of getting everyone ready – Raffy will insist on being carried around all morning, so I’ve mastered the art of cooking and multitasking one-handed

After breakfast, it’s lunchboxes, school runs, and then I’m off to Tarureka Estate. My day is a mix of admin, hosting tours, managing vendors, and keeping an eye on all the moving parts. I wrap up the day picking up the kids, usually heading for a walk with our dog, Albee, or to the playground before returning home to the chaos of building forts, playing teachers, then dinner, story time and bedtime.

6. When is your downtime?

I don’t get much regular 'downtime', but I do get breaks when the kids are at pre-school and in between my work. That’s when I try to fit in some ‘me time’ – whether that’s a workout or a peaceful walk with Albee

On days when the kids are home, I try to completely switch off from work. We go on adventures, explore new places, and just enjoy each other’s company. That’s when I really recharge.

7. If you could squeeze an extra 2 hours into your day, how would you spend them?

I’d spend it exercising. Movement has always been so important for my mental health, but as my work and kids get busier, it’s harder to fit it in. Those extra two hours would go straight into a workout or a walk, something to reset my mind and body.

8. What keeps you up at night?

Work and family balance is always on my mind. I often feel guilty about missing out on time with the kids because of wedding weekends. I worry that I’m not getting the balance right and that I need to shift focus more toward family when I’m at home.

9. Favourite thing to do solo?

Going for walks with my music blasting in my ears. It’s my time to zone out and reset – the kind of solo time that helps me clear my head.

10. Favourite thing to do with your family?

Anything outdoors! Bike rides, bush walks – seeing the kids absolutely light up when they’re outdoors brings me so much joy. It’s those simple moments where we’re all together, having fun, that make everything worthwhile.

11. What does your wind-down time look like?

After tucking the kids in, I put the kettle on and get ready for bed. I’ve really embraced a night-time routine – I spend time with my Hinu oil, massaging my scalp, and nourishing my skin. It’s become my little self-care ritual

I also find myself either finishing up emails or reading a book – I used to just default to Netflix, but now I really value the quiet time a good book brings. It helps me switch off and get ready for a restful night.

12. How do you manage your time between showing up fully in your business and being present with your kids?

It’s a constant juggling act, and I’m still working on finding the right balance. When work gets especially stressful, I notice my patience at home can wear thin, and that’s something I’m really conscious of. I don’t want my stress at work to impact the mood at home with the kids. I’m incredibly lucky, though, that my kids are a big part of the Tarureka Estate energy. Whenever possible, I bring them to work with me. Orla loves helping me set up, and Raffy gets to treat the venue like his personal playground – which, honestly, is the cutest thing to watch!

I’ve found that it’s easier when I don’t try to treat work and home as entirely separate worlds. The kids being a part of the business allows for a more natural flow. Our couples and guests love meeting them, and I think they appreciate the family atmosphere that makes Tarureka Estate feel like a home. I’m learning to stop putting so much pressure on myself to reply to emails immediately or be everywhere at once. Our amazing couples understand that we’re a family-run business, and they know we’re doing our best to balance everything.

13. Book or trashy TV?

Both! It totally depends on the time of the month. Usually, I’m more into books now, but there’s definitely something comforting about a bit of trashy TV when I need it, especially when I’m feeling emotional. It’s like my guilty pleasure.

14. How do you practice self-care?

Exercise is key, as is eating healthy and making sure I don’t skip meals. I’ve also become more mindful about how much time I spend on my phone – cutting down on unnecessary scrolling has been a big one for me. Also, there's a lot to be said for early nights!

15. How would you describe your personal style, and do you blend work and leisure wear, or do you have separate wardrobes?

I’d describe my style as boho – I love flowy dresses and soft, feminine looks. I’m definitely a summer wardrobe girl as winter layering can be a struggle for me! What I love about my job is that I can wear those comfortable, flowy dresses to work and socially.

During winter, my Outland Denim Jeans have been a lifesaver – they’re comfy and smart enough for wedding days while still keeping me moving!

16. What Mum Loop pieces are you coveting right now?

Ooh, it’s tough to pick just one! The new spring Maison Hotel pieces are beautiful – I’m especially eyeing the Cris Dress, Caroline Dress, Cohen Blouse, and the Hugo Pant. They’d be perfect for my spring work wardrobe!

17. What are your favourite beauty products from The Mum Loop, and how do they help you nurture yourself as a busy mum?

The Papermoon Natural Deodorant has been a total game-changer. I’ve tried so many natural options, but this one actually lasts all day. The Hinu Oil has become a staple – it’s worked wonders for my hair, especially since dealing with hair loss. Seeing regrowth has been so calming, and my hair feels softer than ever. The Serene Magnesium Oil is another favourite – it smells divine and really helps me wind down and get a restful sleep. I can definitely tell the difference when I skip it!

18. Do you love The Mum Loop for your casual looks, work looks, or both?

Both, for sure! I love how easy it is to put together an outfit from The Mum Loop without overthinking it. For work, it’s hard to find comfortable yet smart pieces, but Ceres Life has been a lifesaver. And when I’m off-duty, I love the casual, comfy vibes of the pieces.

19. You feel your best when you're wearing?

Beautiful, flowing dresses. I’m definitely in my feminine boho era – when I slip into one of those dresses, I feel like I’m in my element.
