Let's revisit the basics – the capsule wardrobe

I find it's helpful to keep your wardrobe foundations in mind whenever you're considering adding trend-driven and new-season pieces. So, with that in mind – here's a quick recap on what some of the capsule wardrobe principles are – in case you missed our blog that covers that topic in detail.

A capsule wardrobe is about being intentional with what you buy and what you outfit. It’s about buying pieces that are versatile, timeless, and effortlessly pair back with the rest of your wardrobe. It’s about approaching a streamlined way of dressing while still honouring your personal style. If you haven’t already – go and take our ‘what’s my style’ quiz, if you’re feeling fashionably ‘lost’ post-baby.

By building a capsule wardrobe and then modifying each season, you can sensibly assess which new-season trends work with your personal style and existing wardrobe without making frivolous purchases.

A note on sustainability and how it ties into the capsule wardrobe ethos :

To truly be a more sustainable consumer, figure out what you actually like (your personal style), what clothes suit you, feel good on, and the types of styles you return to season after season. Shopping with this mentality will help you purchase with more intention and less waste.

It's important to factor in your lifestyle and requirements as a busy, yet fashion-conscious mum. We'll cover what’s HOT while still being workable for your wardrobe.

Boho is back, babes

You may have noticed more paisley prints, bell-bottom-esque jeans, suede, sequins, and fringing resurfacing, and that’s because the Boho buzz of the early 2000s is back, just in a slightly more luxe way. Think aspirational designers like Isabelle Marant and Chloe, and OG boho celebrities – Sienna Miller and the Olsen twins.

2025 sees the revival of Bohemian across many fashion categories, but you may feel safest adopting it via a single style, such as a pair of wide-leg jeans (yes, they are still very much trending), and are essential in every mum’s wardrobe. You will also see a more obvious nod to flares. If feeling game, you can try wide-leg jeans or jeans with a subtle flare paired back with a relaxed, feminine blouse that features a gorgeous flouncy sleeve and subtle embellishments, like we see featured in many collections by Maison Hotel.

If your finger is somewhat on the fashion pulse, you would have also noticed chocolate brown surfacing. While brown is certainly not for everyone, you may choose to adopt it in a minimal way through your activewear – like we see featured in DK Active's delicious new range. Or, adopt a shade of brown via a print – this way, the brown will not dominate the look.

The 2025 Boho revival sees accents of boho luxe abound. Embrace the glitz and earthy grit through your accessories and footwear – Chelsea boots, handbags, trims, or fully commit with a brown suede jacket paired back with a fringe embellished handbag and denim or a floaty skirt.

Denim, denim and more denim

Who's complaining?

Denim never goes out of style, and 2025 showcases it in its myriad iterations. If you’ve always been keen to try double-denim but never had the confidence to do it, now is the time.

Pair your denim, paisley-print floaty skirt or dress, and suede back with ye old faithful Chelsea leather boots – which are also making a big comeback this year.

Oversized fits and knits

Over the last year, I’ve found myself gravitating towards more generous, oversized knits and sweaters, and I don’t think there will be any going back. I’m too in love with the slouchy, oversized look and the comfort! Big collars and longer lengths work well with more streamlined bottoms, like activewear or slim jeans, and short boxy cuts look amazing with skirts or fisherman-style pants, linen pants, wide-leg, and boyfriend-style jeans.

The oversized look is also trending with more tailored pieces—think the men’s suit look. However, as a mumma, knitwear and cosy blazers might be the safest place to start.

Sportswear – horray I hear you all cry

That's right – sportswear is having a major (more than a moment) moment in 2025. This has been confirmed by Vogue, WWW (Who What Wear), Net-a-porter, basically all the big-name authorities on what's hot and what's not.

But was sportswear/activewear ever really 'out'? Probably not for you and me. I'm sure you, like me, feel like we’ve been perpetually living in the land of activewear. However, I have a few handy tips and tricks to share with you that will help elevate your much-loved activewear, and some key trends to look out for when updating your leisurewear wardrobe this season.

What sportswear looks in particular are trending for 2025?

  • Pop colours (like unexpected red)
  • The return of the hoodie – As a teenager in the early 00s – I’m here for this one!!
  • The romper and onesie – a la DK Active!
  • Layering crops over tees
  • Joggers are really having a moment – Ceres Life pink track pants
  • Stylish and bold bike shorts (DK active Levitate)
  • Ballet pretty pink (Ceres Life blush pink)

Ways to elevate your activewear

  • Throw a leather jacket on and pair back with your leggings
  • Wear a relaxed (or tailored) blazer back with tracksuit bottoms (trust me, this looks really good)
  • Wear your bomber jacket or hoddie back with a midi-length skirt

Nautical stripes and striped polos

Shop the Ceres Life vanilla & maroon stripe Slouchy Stevie Tee here.

Striped polos have been spotted on all the runways and in the streets of some of the world's most fashionable cities. I'm excited to announce that Modstrom, a new Mum Loop brand dropping in spring, has fully embraced this trend.

Think rugby jersey vibes – but with more sophisticated shaping. And although some of you may be unsure about the close association these striped polos have with the rugby culture we're familiar with here in NZ – they will continue to dominate. Modstom – being a Danish brand, brings the cool Scandi flair to this trend, making it more cool-girl fashion appropriate, rather than 'rugby sporty'. This look is trending with both a t-shirt length sleeve and full length sleeve, in a variety of colour combos, but maroon definitely seems to be the favoured colour dominating.

And finally... Personal style

I personally love this idea – it might appear to contradict the very idea of covering seasonal ‘trends’, given that personal style is by its very nature – open to interpretation of the individual, but this year, we are told by major tastemakers and fashion influencers, that 2025 gives rise to the era of personal flair. This is therefore an opportune time to rediscover your personal style and embrace your mum era with full confidence. It means not religiously following trends, but rather picking and choosing what meshes well with your personal preferences, and embracing that unabashedly.
