Postpartum Underwear Guide
Videris founder shares her top tips for finding the perfect postpartum underwear
Here are a few tips and insights for new (and seasoned) mums looking to refresh their underwear drawer after birth. Our guest post is written by Chloe Julian – Founder & Director of our favourite lingerie brand – Videris Lingerie.
Postpartum Knickers
Immediately after birth, comfort is key. I always recommend our Bikini Knicker, it’s the style I wore myself postpartum, and one I also wore during pregnancy. It sits perfectly under a bump and continues to be a comfortable, flattering option once baby arrives. The waistband sits slightly higher than most bikinis, comfortably above a C-section scar, to avoid any irritation on this sensitive area – a small but important design detail I prioritised.
Our knickers are made from TENCEL™, a breathable, naturally moisture-absorbent fibre that’s softer and more hygienic than cotton. Even the gusset is made from the same fabric, offering added comfort and protection during those early weeks of bleeding or discharge. I recommend choosing darker colours during this time for peace of mind around staining.
Maternity Bras
Whether you plan to breastfeed or not, your breasts will likely feel tender and changeable after birth. Your rib cage may still be expanded from pregnancy, so it’s important to avoid anything restrictive, especially underwire, which can put pressure on sensitive breast tissue and milk ducts.
If you are breastfeeding, our Belle Maternity Bra is a beautiful wire-free option designed to support you through that transition. I developed this style during my own pregnancy with my daughter and tested it on myself throughout. A maternity bra is something you often wear 24 hours a day, so I took everything I’d learned from my first pregnancy and focused on what I truly needed, something soft, breathable, supportive and adaptable.
It’s a bra I know really works, thoughtfully created to meet the needs of real women, in real moments of change. The flexible cup capacity supports you through the fluctuations in breast size that happen during this stage, from early engorgement to when your milk settles down.
Not Breastfeeding?
If you’re not nursing or are looking for something to wear once you’ve weaned, our everyday bras, the Angela (A–DD cup), Sarah (A–DD cup), and Rachel (DD-G cup) are all excellent options. They’re wire-free, breathable, and designed to move with your body. Each offers a flexible cup capacity, so they adapt to the natural fluctuations in your breasts during this time and remain wearable long after.
Some women do choose to breastfeed in these styles too – if so, we suggest lifting the bra up from the underband rather than pulling the cup down from the strap to avoid stretching the elastic over time.
Care Made Easy
All our lingerie is machine washable on a gentle cycle, making it easier to care for your underwear during this busy time.
Above all, I believe your underwear should support you — not just physically, but emotionally, especially during the vulnerable, powerful, messy and miraculous postpartum period.
