Outland Denim – The Cool Denim Brand with a Conscience

Get Aquainted with Outland Denim – The Brand Making Big Waves

What drew me to Outland Demim as a buyer?

For starters, I am a denim aficionado through and through and have loved wearing jeans for as long as I can remember. There are denim brands aplenty, but very few tick all the boxes that I now require as a mum. I need style, quality, comfort and fit – as I'm sure you do too. I don't mind spending more for premium quality denim, as I consider jeans an absolute fashion essential and the item that works the hardest in my wardrobe.

I first discovered Outland Denim online and was instantly drawn to a collaboration they had done with another well-known Aussie fashion brand – Aje. The styles were so fashion-forward, yet classic in their appeal. I then hunted down the New Zealand brand representative to arrange a meeting and view the next collection in person.

As soon as I felt Outland Denim in the flesh, I knew I was onto something special for fashion-conscious mums. The denim was soft yet held it's structure well. I learnt that most of Outland Denim's styles feature their signature comfort stretch – a must-have, as we need the ability to move with ease as busy mums. Then came the brand story – their sustainability model and do-good ethics 10x the appeal for me. I want to share a little behind-the-scenes of what makes Outland Denim an incredible brand to be partnered with and one I know you will absolutely love, too.

Check out Outland Denim's founding story below

Outland Denim's founder, James Bartle, talks about what inspired the brand's inception and how he's giving opportunities to those most in need. Outland Denim helps young women out of poverty and human trafficking by providing them with education and paid work to help break the cycle. An awe-inspiring mission.

Straight from the founder's mouth

When we launched Outland Denim to market in 2016, after five years of conceptual development, the idea of conscious consumerism was just beginning to gather pace. The idea of pairing style and status with social and environmental responsibility was coming to the fore. “Sustainability” was finally having its time.

We are a brand, first and foremost, of the people. But it is only through the significant cultural influence of the fashion industry and the people who wear and love fashion that we can truly make a change.

When our customers and retailers invest into Outland Denim and wear our garments, we are able to create immediate, tangible change. The hands that have crafted our jeans are the very definition of empowered women: enabled by the work, the decency of income, and the dignity in applying their skills and perfecting their work.

In turn, we believe we have been able to create the most feel-good denim in the marketplace

Behind the brand

Outland Denim was born on an Australian hinterland mountaintop and made with the makers in mind. Outland Denim manufactures and finishes its goods through its own production house in Cambodia, where their staff are paid living wages and are offered a host of holistic support. They have been able to realise their founding mission of giving work to victims of human trafficking.

On each pocket lining, you’ll find a personal note from one of Outland Denim's seamstresses and a QR code that allows you to contact her directly about your garment.

All their garments are made from sustainable raw materials, including organic and recycled cotton, with meticulous attention to detail. Their priority is maintaining integrity in every stage of manufacturing. All Outland Denim suppliers are required to comply with their strict Code of Conduct and are displayed on Outland Denim's website following the commencement of the supply contract.

Outland Denim became the first Australian, and second denim brand globally, to become B Corporation certified.

We prioritise the use of natural fibres or biodegradable materials that have low-impact production methods, but feel like a second skin: our pieces must feel luxurious to wear.

An ethical brand with epic impact

Outland Denim have spent well over a decade developing their business model, designed to support young women (and men) out of modern slavery and vulnerability through investment in training, life skills acquisition, economic empowerment and opportunity for career progression.

Their staff have reported a low debt load, higher saving frequency, ambitions for their children, feelings of empowerment and detailed plans for the future. As a Mum Loop customer and supporter of the Outland Denim brand – you are key to their ability to create even more opportunities and see more people set free from modern slavery.

Our dedication to elevating the lives of our staff is matched by our commitment to sustainable sourcing and production. We choose to only work with premium and sustainably certified raw materials.

Our collections pay homage to the heritage of denim with a nod to the necessary contemporary concern for sustainability. We are inspired by the beauty of a carefully constructed garment, the simplicity of a perfectly placed pocket or thread accent.
